The Centre made it mandatory for domestic urea manufacturers to coat at least 75 per cent of the fertiliser with neem. The ‘neem-coated urea’ (NCU) is expected to not just cut subsidy burden by as much as 6,500 crore by reducing urea usage but also protect the soil along with acting as a natural insecticide. The neem-coated variety is priced at 5 per cent above the MRP. Sales of NCU have increased over the years with 36.23 lakh tonnes (lt) sold in 2011-12, which rose to 50.50 lt and 63.41 lt in 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively. As per official estimates, urea imports between April and February of the current fiscal stood at 78.43 lt, 13 per cent higher than the 69.27 lt imported during the corresponding period in 2013-14, when total imports were pegged at 70.88 lt.
