Converting Food Waste into a Resource – A Success Story

While acknowledging the need for Sustainable Environment, a renowned automobile manufacturing complex in India set up a biogas plant for a dual purpose of managing food waste in the most scientific way and also to achieve LPG substitution by biogas thus produced. The article describes this success story of converting food waste into a valuable resource for energy generation. Not only the kitchen wash water but also left-over food, vegetable cuttings, kitchen preparation waste, excess food prepared in the kitchen and left-over food from canteens is processed gainfully through the biogas plant. The article describes the waste management practice adopted; characteristics of the waste, operating process and cost benefit analysis. The practice is highly useful for industry complexes generating more than 1 MT/day of food waste to explore the sustainable way of food waste management.
