A 24 – 35% hike in the fellowship stipend of researchers was announced by the government. The hike will be effective from January 1 this year and will benefit 60,000 researchers in the science and technology field. The salary of a Junior Research Fellow was increased to Rs 31,000 from Rs 25,000 and that of a Senior Reseacrh Fellow (SRF) has been hiked to Rs 35,000 from Rs 28,000 as per the office memorandum issued by the department of science and technology (ministry of science and technology).
The central government has enhanced the fellowship of PhD students and other research personnel enrolled in any area of science and technology including physical and chemical sciences, engineering, mathematical sciences, agricultural sciences, life sciences, pharmacy and others. The research scholars are not happy with the ‘low hike’ and are likely to intensify their agitation launched in September 2018.
