The inaugural oil extraction from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) recently initiated KG deep-sea oilfield has been shipped to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), for refining into various fuels such as petrol and diesel. In January, ONGC initiated oil production from its Krishna Godavari basin KG-DWN-98/2 (KG-D5) block, situated off the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
Currently, the field is yielding approximately 12,000-12,500 barrels of oil per day, employing a floating production and storage offloading (FPSO) system. The FPSO stores the oil until it reaches a critical volume, at which point it is transferred to a vessel for transportation to a refinery.
This isn’t the first time that MRPL, a subsidiary of ONGC has been the recipient of oil produced by the company. As reported by the pioneer, MRPL previously received the initial oil from ONGC’s Sudan property in 2003, as well as from the Russian far-eastern field of Sakhalin-1 in 2006 and the waxy crude from Cairn’s Rajasthan block, which commenced production in 2009.
