Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) launched India’s inaugural multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project at the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh. The pioneering green hydrogen facility is designed to support the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating facility at NJHPS by providing necessary combustion fuel and generating electricity through a 25 kW capacity fuel cell.

The facility produces hydrogen by electrolyzing water into hydrogen and oxygen using a 20Nm3/hr capacity alkaline electrolyzer, powered by renewable energy sourced from SJVN’s 1.31 MW solar power plant in Wadhal, Himachal Pradesh. Capable of producing 14 kg of green hydrogen each day during its eight-hour operational schedule, the hydrogen is stored across six tanks. The hydrogen is primarily used for the HVOF coating of turbine parts submerged in water.

As reported by Projects Today, in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project significantly contributes to the advancement of green hydrogen production facilities within the power industry. The event also saw the commencement of centralized operations for both the 1,500 MW NJHPS and the 412 MW Rampur Hydro Power Station (RHPS).
