The Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the ministry of science and technology has sanctioned ₹50 crore each for four green hydrogen valley projects. The projects are set to be established in Kerala, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, and Jodhpur.

In Kerala, the hydrogen valley innovation cluster (HVIC) will focus on generating hydrogen via biomass and electrolysis, targeting the marine and roadway mobility sectors. The Bhubaneswar-HVIC will also use electrolysis to produce hydrogen, catering primarily to the steel and mobility sectors.

Pune-HVIC plans to utilize bioethanol and electrolysis for hydrogen production, aiming at the fine chemicals and mobility industries. The Jodhpur-HVIC will employ both biomass and electrolysis methods to produce hydrogen, with applications including hydrogen internal combustion engines and blending with city gas production. Additionally, this project will produce ammonia.

The initiatives will be managed by a newly formed Section 8 company to ensure operational sustainability beyond the initial five-year period, as stated by the DST. The DST has called for proposals from agencies to establish these hydrogen valleys under Mission Innovation.

The global initiative, involving 23 countries and the European Commission, aims to drive action and investment in research and development to make clean energy more affordable and accessible.

As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, the primary goal of these hydrogen valleys is to enhance research, innovation, and capacity among scientific and industrial stakeholders, demonstrating clean hydrogen solutions for local, regional, and national implementation.
