The government has taken a significant step to boost demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives in the country. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has issued a Request for Selection (RfS) to choose green ammonia producers in India.
The selection is through a cost-based competitive bidding process under Mode 2A of the strategic interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme, part of the national green hydrogen mission managed by the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE).
The bidding process will allocate a total capacity of 5,39,000 metric tons (MT) per year of green ammonia, which will be conducted via e-bidding followed by an e-reverse auction. The green ammonia produced will be supplied to fertilizer companies.
Previously, MNRE released guidelines for the SIGHT programme’s component II, which incentivizes green ammonia production under Mode 2A. SECI has been designated as the implementing agency for this initiative.
As part of the SIGHT Programme, MNRE has already allocated 4,12,000 MT per year for green hydrogen production capacity and 1.5 GW per year for electrolyzer manufacturing capacity.
Launched on January 4, 2023, with a budget of ₹19,744 crore extending to FY 2029-30, the national green hydrogen mission aims to support India’s goal of becoming self-reliant through clean energy. As reported by pib.gov.in, the mission is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, lessen dependence on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market.
