India is set to launch its first large-scale commercial production of green hydrogen molecules from the Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu. The project is being spearheaded by Singapore based Sembcorp Industries, an energy and urban solutions provider, which is investing ₹36,238 crore to establish a green hydrogen and green ammonia manufacturing unit in the port city.
The facility, spanning 160 acres will initially produce 2,00,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually, primarily for export to Japan. The front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase for the plant has already commenced.
The state’s industries minister highlighted that Tamil Nadu would be the first state in India to begin large-scale commercial production of green hydrogen molecules. The offtake agreement for the export of green ammonia from India to Japan, facilitated by Singapore, marks the first such cross-border collaboration between the three nations, according to Sembcorp Industries.
Earlier in 2024, Sembcorp had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet (TNGIM) to establish the facility. Vipul Tuli, Chairman, South Asia, and CEO, Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp Industries, noted that the project is progressing towards an advanced stage.
