Sembcorp Begins Construction of Green Ammonia Plant in Tamil Nadu

Sembcorp Industries commenced the construction of its green ammonia plant in the port city of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The project has an investment of ₹36,200 crore.

The company has secured approximately 160 acres of land at the V O Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi for the project. The plant’s front-end engineering and design work is already underway, with an initial production target of 2,00,000 tons of green ammonia annually, primarily for export to Japan.

Sembcorp has entered into an agreement with Japan’s Kyushu Electric Power Company, Sojitz Corporation, and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) to export the green ammonia produced at the facility to Japan. NYK will manage the maritime transport and develop a supply chain from India to Japan, focusing on the Kyushu region.

As reported by projectstoday.com, the event follows eight months after Sembcorp and the Tamil Nadu government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project during the third Global Investors Meet.
