Fertilizer cooperative IFFCO is positive about its research into a new type of nano-liquid urea that could potentially be used for basal application, unlike the current version which is designed only for foliar application. If successful, this new nano urea could replace traditional granular urea, according to Iffco’s Managing Director, US Awasthi.
IFFCO exported 54,000 bottles of nano urea (500 ml each) since its introduction in August 2021 and is awaiting approvals for nano DAP (diammonium phosphate) to expand its export markets. Notable export destinations include Brazil, the US, and Zambia.
IFFCO is capable of producing 170 million bottles of nano urea annually, but it only sold approximately 30 million bottles in 2023-24. Awasthi anticipates that it will take another three years to reach 70% of its production capacity.
IFFCO plans to retain control over its nano technology and will not license it to other companies in the future. Currently, it has transferred the technology to public sector firms RCF and NFL at no cost and to a private company in Gujarat on a royalty basis.
IFFCO has invested about ₹2,000 crore in developing nano-liquid urea and has been selling it at ₹225 per 500 ml bottle since 2021, with no government subsidy involved.
