Hindalco’s copper division is investing ₹2,450 crore in two new copper projects in Gujarat, including an e-waste recycling facility at Dahej, South Gujarat, designed to produce 200 kilotons of copper annually.
In phase-1, the plant will recover around 50 kilotons of copper. Upon completion, the facility will handle approximately 300-350 kilotons of scrap and e-waste each year, producing 200 kilotons of copper in total.
Phase-1 investment will be ₹2,000 crore, with plans to scale the investment fourfold in the future. Additionally, the company aims to organize India’s scrap collection industry through the project.
The recycling plant will recover not just copper but also multi-metals such as silver, gold, and other valuable metals, offering a strategic advantage to Hindalco, which currently imports ninety percent of its copper concentrate for its Dahej smelter.
Hindalco’s copper smelting complex in the state is one of the largest globally, producing over half a million tons of copper. As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, the company is also expanding its upstream capacity at Dahej by an additional 250-280 kilotons to meet India’s rising copper demand, which will enhance its capacity by 50-60 percent.
