Hindustan Zinc, a subsidiary of Vedanta, is planning a potential entry into the zinc-based or zinc-nickel battery manufacturing sector. The company is exploring zinc-based batteries as an alternative to the widely discussed lithium batteries, which are central to the global energy transition efforts.
Hindustan Zinc has partnered with various academic institutions and companies for research and development in the zinc-battery space. This includes memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) to advance zinc alloy development, electrolytes, and recycling processes, and with Aesir Technologies to work on nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery solutions.
The company has roped in an India-based battery manufacturer into the fold. Hindustan Zinc will supply the raw materials, while overseas partners will focus on developing the necessary technology. As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, the Indian battery manufacturer will handle investment decisions, including the factory’s location, production capacities, and other logistics.
