Essar Energy Transition (EET) is set to transform UK’s Stanlow refinery into the world’s first decarbonised green refinery, utilizing blue hydrogen for its heating and power needs, according to Prashant Ruia, Director, Essar Capital.
Through EET’s HyNet project, which recently secured $650 million in funding, the first phase will generate 350 megawatts (MW) of blue hydrogen, with plans to expand to 1 gigawatt (GW) in the second phase.
“We are committed to making Stanlow the world’s first decarbonised green refinery by reducing 95% of carbon dioxide emissions produced during the conversion of crude oil into fuels like petrol and diesel,” stated Ruia.
Over the next five years, EET Fuels plans to invest $1.2 billion to reduce its emissions by 95% by 2030, employing measures such as energy efficiency, carbon capture, and switching to cleaner fuels.
The initiative aims to lower the North West region’s overall carbon emissions by 12.5%. As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, additionally, the use of blue hydrogen in refinery operations is expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to 2.5 million tons, which is equivalent to removing 1.1 million cars from the roads.
