In a landmark move to enhance Indo-German partnership in science and technology, union minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and German federal minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger signed a joint declaration of Intent focused on research and development in advanced materials.
The exchange emphasised on the mutual dedication of both countries to drive research that fosters innovation and tackles global challenges. The bilateral talks between ministers took place ahead of the two heads of state’s plenary meeting.
Dr. Singh expressed gratitude towards Germany’s continuous support in bolstering the Indo-German partnership and highlighted recent collaborative achievements. Among these are the launch of 2+2 joint projects on “Waste to Wealth” and sustainable packaging, alongside a fresh call for AI-driven proposals aimed at sustainability.
This initiative and a joint declaration of intent will be presented at the forthcoming Indo-German intergovernmental consultations.
Dr. Singh praised the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) for its crucial role in advancing joint research efforts. The centre has supported over 50 projects and has been a key link for young researchers from both nations.
He noted the establishment of the International Research Training Group (IRTG) between IISER Trivandrum and Würzburg University. The IRTG focuses on photoluminescence in supramolecular matrices.
Dr. Singh reaffirmed India’s commitment to major international ventures such as the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, where Indian scientists play a significant role in particle physics and advanced materials research.
The discussions further underscored India’s national R&D initiatives, like the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and the National Quantum Mission, which focus on scaling up research in areas such as electric mobility, sustainable agriculture, and advanced materials. There were discussions regarding collaborative opportunities in hydrogen energy as well. Dr. Singh highlighting India’s national hydrogen mission as a platform for joint R&D, production, and sustainable energy storage efforts.
