Shell Catalysts & Technologies has announced that its CANSOLV CO₂ capture system will play a pivotal role in the landmark Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) project.

The project has achieved its final investment decision (FID) and is now poised for construction. It represents a significant milestone in the UK’s journey toward net-zero emissions.

Leading the Carbon Capture Charge

NZT Power marks the third deployment of Shell’s CANSOLV CO₂ Capture System to reach FID in the past year. This signals the global acceleration of carbon capture initiatives.

The project will generate up to 742 megawatts of low-carbon, flexible power. It will be one of the first commercial-scale gas-fired power plants globally to integrate carbon capture technology.

Using Shell’s proprietary technology and advanced amine solution, the CANSOLV system will capture up to two million tons of CO₂ annually. This will be from the plant’s combined-cycle gas turbine emissions.

The Northern Endurance Partnership will transport and permanently store the captured carbon beneath the North Sea.

Strategic Partnerships Fuel Success

Shell Catalysts & Technologies has teamed up with Technip Energies, GE Vernova, and Balfour Beatty. They are delivering this transformative project as part of a Technip Energies-led consortium.

After a rigorous three-year selection process, the consortium secured the contract in 2024.

Supporting the East Coast Cluster

Located in Teesside, UK, the project is part of the East Coast Cluster. This is one of the UK government’s first two carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) clusters with Track 1 status.

The initiative underscores the UK’s determination to achieve its 2050 net-zero targets and transition to clean power by 2030.

Driving Decarbonization Goals

As one of the few projects of its kind globally, NZT Power demonstrates the UK’s leadership in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

The facility sets a benchmark for integrating carbon capture with gas-fired power generation. It supports the nation’s ambitious decarbonization roadmap.

Leadership Perspectives

Nick Flinn, Director of Shell Catalysts & Technologies, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “Shell’s selection as the carbon capture technology provider for Net Zero Teesside Power reflects the proven capabilities of Shell’s CANSOLV CO₂ technology in delivering substantial, reliable emissions reductions at scale.” With the potential to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, it marks a significant step toward achieving the UK’s net-zero ambitions.”

Christophe Malaurie, Senior Vice President of Decarbonisation at Technip Energies added, “We are proud to partner with Shell Catalysts & Technologies to deliver this pioneering project. Shell’s CANSOLV CO₂ technology addresses the unique challenges of dispatchable power decarbonization, paving the way for a cost-effective and sustainable energy transition in the UK.”

A Step Toward a Greener Future

As NZT Power moves forward, it highlights the critical role of innovative technologies and collaborative partnerships in shaping a sustainable energy landscape.

As per the press release, the project accelerates the UK’s net-zero goals and sets a global precedent for integrating carbon capture into power generation.
