Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Curtin University, located in Western Australia, to explore potential research and development opportunities in the field of critical minerals.

The agreement, signed at Curtin University in Perth, marks the beginning of a significant collaboration between the two entities.

Knowledge Sharing in De-carbonisation and Resource Technologies

In addition to the focus on critical minerals, the MoU also emphasizes collaboration in de-carbonisation and resource technologies.

The partnership aims to drive forward innovations that can aid in sustainable mining practices and energy solutions.

Previous Collaboration with IREL

Coal India had previously entered into a non-binding MoU with IREL (India) Ltd to enhance cooperation in the development of critical minerals.

The collaboration also aligns with CIL’s broader strategy of securing essential resources for India’s growing energy needs.

CIL’s Vision for Clean Energy Goals

CIL Chairman, P.M. Prasad, has highlighted the strategic importance of acquiring critical mineral assets, both domestically and internationally, in order to support India’s clean energy ambitions.

The partnership with Curtin University further strengthens this vision by leveraging global expertise.

Government Support for Critical Mineral Mission

The Indian Government has also shown its commitment to the development of critical minerals.

As reported by psuwatch.com, as part of the Union Budget 2024-25, the government announced the Critical Mineral Mission, which aims to boost domestic production, enhance recycling efforts, and incentivize the acquisition of mineral assets, thus supporting the country’s clean energy goals.
