LyondellBasell (LYB), one of the world’s largest licensor of polyolefin technologies, announced that Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) has selected its Hostalen Advanced Cascade Process (Hostalen ACP) technology for a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant.
The 500 kiloton per year (kta) facility will be integrated into IOCL’s Paradip complex in Odisha, India. This expansion strengthens Paradip’s position as one of India’s largest integrated refinery-petrochemical complexes, which includes a 15 million tonnes per year refinery.
Strategic Growth in India’s Polymer Market
The addition of the state-of-the-art HDPE unit will support the growing polymer demand in the Indian subcontinent.
The Paradip facility plays a crucial role in serving this expanding market, and the new HDPE plant will further enhance its petrochemical operations.
Strengthening the LYB-IOCL Partnership
The latest agreement marks the eighth technology license collaboration between LYB and IOCL.
The two companies have now licensed over 2,500 kta of polyolefin capacity, with installations at both the Paradip and Panipat sites.
IOCL operates multiple LYB technologies, including the Hostalen ACP process and the Spheripol polypropylene (PP) process.
Innovative Hostalen ACP Technology for High-Performance HDPE
The new HDPE plant will utilize LYB’s Avant Z501 and Avant Z509-1 catalysts to produce a comprehensive range of multi-modal HDPE products.
The Hostalen ACP process employs a single catalyst family based on Ziegler chemistry, enabling the production of a full range of resins while minimizing lower-value transition products.
Advanced Material Properties and Industry Applications
Hostalen ACP technology produces high-performance, multi-modal HDPE resins known for their superior stiffness-to-toughness balance, impact resistance, and stress cracking resistance.
The resins are essential for infrastructure pipes and are widely used in film, blow moulding, and caps and closures manufacturing. Their exceptional processing advantages make them a preferred choice across industries.
Technical Support and Continuous Innovation
New licensees can benefit from LYB’s in-house expertise in continuous production improvement, sustainable product development, and catalyst know-how by joining the company’s optional Technical Service program.
Comprehensive Portfolio of Polyolefin Technologies
In addition to the Hostalen ACP process, LyondellBasell offers a diverse range of licensed polyolefin processes and catalysts:
- Spheripol – The leading PP process technology with over 35 million tons of licensed capacity. Recognized for high-quality grades, it provides excellent monomer consumption and low investment costs.
- Spherizone – A breakthrough multi-zone circulating reactor that enables the production of polypropylene with unique architecture and enhanced properties.
- Metocene PP – An innovative add-on technology that produces specialty polypropylene using single-site catalyst systems.
- Lupotech – The market leader in high-pressure technology, offering high conversion rates and an efficient heat recovery system for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers production.
- Avant – Advanced Ziegler-Natta catalysts, including non-phthalate, chromium, and metallocene catalysts, designed for the entire range of polyolefin production.
As per the press release, with the latest collaboration, LyondellBasell continues to expand its impact in India’s growing polymer market while reinforcing its position as a global leader in polyolefin technology licensing.
