Plug Power, a US-based manufacturer of green hydrogen fuel cells, is aiming to establish multi-gigawatt electrolyser manufacturing plants in India by the end of 2030.
The timeline will depend on demand and cost factors influenced by the Indian government, according to Sanjay Shrestha, President of Plug Power.
Strategic Collaboration with Local Partners
Shrestha expressed excitement about collaborating with a key local partner in India, who understands the market dynamics and has a broader reach within the country.
The collaboration aims to lower costs and accelerate the availability of green hydrogen at an economically competitive rate.
He emphasized that if projects in India grow significantly, the company is open to exploring strategic partnerships to further drive industry growth.
Government Support and Demand Mandates
To facilitate the growth of the green hydrogen industry, Shrestha highlighted the importance of visible demand mandates from the Indian government.
He called for policies that would bring green hydrogen prices in line with grey hydrogen, similar to the production tax credits provided in the US, such as the $3 per kg subsidy.
Expanding Electrolyser Manufacturing Capacity
Plug Power already operates a 1.2-GW electrolyser factory in Rochester, US, which Shrestha stated can be expanded with minimal additional investment.
The company also boasts the world’s first and largest liquid green hydrogen plant in Georgia. It is also working on finalizing a 100-MW PEM electrolyser project in Europe.
