The event began with the inauguration of “Interfaces”, an immersive 3D-printed wall sculpture that visually represents the intricate relationship between science, engineering, and art. This striking installation symbolizes the laboratory’s commitment to interdisciplinary research.
Showcasing Achievements and Future Goals
CSIR-NCL Director Dr. Ashish Lele presented a comprehensive report outlining the laboratory’s major accomplishments in 2024. He also detailed the science, innovation, and technology roadmap for 2021-2030, emphasizing key milestones and future opportunities. Dr. Lele discussed the challenges ahead and suggested strategic interventions to ensure sustained progress.
Keynote Address by Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw reflected on her first visit to CSIR-NCL in 1989 and praised its long history of innovation. She urged Indian scientists to leverage emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing to drive advancements in biosciences and healthcare. She emphasized that India has the talent and ambition to lead globally in new drug development and advanced scientific research. However, she underscored the need for consistent investments, supportive government policies, a robust research environment, and collaboration among stakeholders to translate potential into groundbreaking achievements.
Insights from Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar
Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar highlighted CSIR-NCL’s significant contributions to cutting-edge technologies and its role in solving critical industrial challenges. He recalled the laboratory’s expertise in crisis management, citing its contributions during the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the Maharashtra Gas Cracker Complex blast. He also applauded CSIR-NCL’s leadership in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and its success in securing a prestigious World Bank consultancy contract. According to Dr. Mashelkar, innovation – not budget constraints – drives success. He expressed confidence in CSIR-NCL’s potential to lead global advancements in science and technology.
