German semiconductor company Infineon has signed an agreement with CDIL Semiconductors, India’s first semiconductor manufacturer, to supply silicon wafers for power chip production. This partnership aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and aims to strengthen the country’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
Power Chip Manufacturing for Key Applications
Under the agreement, Infineon will supply bare semiconductor wafers to CDIL. CDIL will then process these wafers for assembly and packaging to manufacture power chipsets. These chips will power applications in solar technology, power inverters, automobile power solutions, and renewable energy.
CDIL’s Legacy and Future Expansion Plans
Founded in 1964, Continental Device India (CDIL) specializes in discrete semiconductors and silicon carbide (SiC) devices. Initially, the company will focus on supplying power chips to Indian customers. However, it has ambitious plans to expand exports globally in the future.
Driving Innovation and Localization
CDIL President Pankaj Gulati stated, “By integrating Infineon’s world-class wafer technology with CDIL’s advanced OSAT capabilities, we are setting new benchmarks in innovation and localization. This partnership goes beyond growth—it drives innovation, accelerates ‘Make in India,’ and positions India as a hub for semiconductor excellence”.
As reported by projectstoday.com, the strategic alliance is expected to enhance India’s semiconductor ecosystem, reduce reliance on imports, and position the country as a competitive player in the global semiconductor industry.
