Zydus Lifesciences announced its decision to acquire an 85.6% stake in France-based Amplitude Surgical for €256.8 million. The acquisition aligns with Zydus’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the global medical devices sector.

Premium Deal Amid Changing Market Conditions

The acquisition price represents a significant 81% premium over Amplitude Surgical’s last closing price. The move comes at a time when India’s pharmaceutical industry is preparing for potential U.S. import taxes on pharmaceuticals. The United States remains Zydus Lifesciences’ largest market, contributing 47% of its total revenue, followed by India.

Diversifying Beyond Generic Drugs

While Zydus Lifesciences primarily focuses on manufacturing generic drugs, it has been actively diversifying its portfolio. The company has been expanding into specialty drugs and medical technology to drive long-term growth.

Strategic Growth Opportunities in Orthopedic Surgery

Zydus Lifesciences sees strong growth potential in Amplitude Surgical’s portfolio, capabilities, and geographic presence. “In Amplitude Surgical, we see several medium-term and long-term growth opportunities with respect to portfolio, capabilities, manufacturing, and geographies,” said Sharvil Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences.

Strengthening International Presence

Amplitude Surgical specializes in developing surgical technologies for lower-limb orthopedics, focusing on hip and knee procedures. The company has established a strong international presence, operating in over 30 countries. As of June 2024, it employed 428 people and reported sales of nearly €106 million.

As reported by reuters.com, with this acquisition, Zydus aims to strengthen its position in the medical devices industry while expanding its global reach.
