The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has achieved a historic milestone in FY 2024-25 by adding 25 GW of renewable energy capacity. This marks a significant 35% increase from the 18.57 GW added in the previous year. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India continues to accelerate its clean energy transition.
Solar Power Leads the Renewable Energy Boom
India’s solar power sector played a key role in this growth, with capacity additions rising from 15 GW in FY24 to nearly 21 GW in FY25—an impressive 38% increase. This year, the country also crossed the landmark of 100 GW in installed solar capacity, strengthening its position as a global leader in solar energy.
Domestic Solar Manufacturing Sees Unprecedented Growth
India made significant strides in solar module and PV cell manufacturing. The country’s solar module manufacturing capacity nearly doubled, increasing from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW in March 2025. Meanwhile, solar PV cell manufacturing capacity tripled from 9 GW to 25 GW. Additionally, India’s first ingot-wafer manufacturing facility (2 GW) began production in FY25.
Through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules, investments worth ₹41,000 crore have been made, creating approximately 11,650 direct jobs and bolstering India’s self-reliance in solar technology.
Green Hydrogen Sector Gains Strong Momentum
India’s Green Hydrogen sector made major advancements in FY25. The government allocated:
*₹2,220 crore in incentives for 1,500 MW per annum of electrolyser manufacturing.
*₹2,239 crore for 4,50,000 tons per annum (TPA) of Green Hydrogen production.
Additionally, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the government funded:
*Seven pilot projects with ₹454 crore to decarbonize the steel sector.
Five pilot projects in the transport sector, investing ₹208 crore to introduce 37 hydrogen-fueled vehicles and nine hydrogen refueling stations.
IREDA Strengthens Renewable Energy Financing
The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) played a key role in financing clean energy projects. In FY25:
*Loan sanctions increased 27% to ₹47,453 crore.
*Loan disbursements rose 20% to ₹30,168 crore.
India Rises as a Global Renewable Energy Leader
Union minister of new and renewable energy, Prahlad Joshi, emphasized India’s growing leadership in the global renewable energy sector. “India may have already become or will soon become the third-largest renewable energy capacity holder in the world. This milestone is a testament to Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a sustainable and self-reliant energy future,” he stated.
As reported by pib.gov.in, with these achievements, India continues to demonstrate its commitment to clean energy and sustainability, paving the way for a greener and more energy-secure future.
