Solvay officially launched its rare earths production line for permanent magnets at its La Rochelle facility in France. This expansion represents a major step in the Group’s commitment to supporting Europe’s strategic autonomy and green industrial goals. With this move, Solvay strengthens its global leadership in the rare earths market while contributing directly to the European Union’s Clean Industrial Deal.

Largest Rare Earths Plant Outside China Gets a Boost

The investment upgrades Europe’s only rare earth separation facility outside China. Solvay plans to use its expertise to scale sustainable solutions for EVs, wind energy, electronics, and defense.

Commercial Production Begins to Serve Critical Industries

Solvay begins commercial deliveries of rare earth materials for use in permanent magnets – critical components in the clean energy and mobility transition. This marks the first step toward meeting 30% of Europe’s rare earth demand by 2030.

Diversified Sourcing in Line with EU Mandates

To ensure supply security, the facility will source rare earth elements and recycled materials from a diverse range of global suppliers and mining partners, in alignment with the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. The diversified approach supports a more resilient and sustainable supply chain.

Building Europe’s Rare Earths Ecosystem through Collaboration

Solvay is actively partnering with emerging players in mining and recycling to help build a robust European value chain for rare earths. “Our ambition is to create a competitive and resilient ecosystem,” said Philippe Kehren, CEO of Solvay. “Strong collaboration with governments, suppliers, and customers is essential. Together, we can position Europe as a global leader in sustainable technologies,” added Kehren.

Driving Innovation with a Focus on Sustainability

An Nuyttens, President of Solvay’s Special Chem business, stated, “As we expand capacity, we are also taking significant steps to reinvent our processes. Specifically, we aim to reduce CO₂ emissions by 40% and cut water usage by half by 2030. Moreover, our unique expertise in rare earth separation ensures we remain the preferred partner for customers in Europe and beyond.”

Looking Ahead

As per the press release, with this launch, Solvay has not only reinforced its rare earths leadership but also laid the foundation for a cleaner, more secure, and competitive industrial future in Europe.
