Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has successfully commissioned its first Green Hydrogen Plant at the Bina Refinery, marking a major step in advancing India’s clean energy goals. This 5MW facility is one of the largest of its kind in the country. It reinforces BPCL’s commitment to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s Net Zero targets for 2070.
Inauguration and Project Timeline
Shri G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, virtually inaugurated the plant on April 26, 2025. Remarkably, BPCL completed the project in just 15 months, setting a benchmark for rapid and cost-effective execution among India’s public sector oil marketing companies.
High Capacity and Emission Reduction Potential
As per the LinkedIn post of BPCL, The newly commissioned plant features two advanced electrolysers, each with a capacity of 500 Nm³/hr, engineered for optimal energy efficiency. The facility has a production capacity of over 780 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. The facility is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 9,000 tonnes annually and significantly aid India’s decarbonization efforts.
Driving BPCL’s Net Zero Goals
This initiative forms a core part of BPCL’s strategy to achieve Net Zero for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040. By investing in green hydrogen, BPCL is reducing its carbon footprint. It is also contributing to India’s broader transition to sustainable, low-carbon energy sources.
Paving the Way for a Greener Future
With the successful commissioning of this plant, BPCL continues to lead by example in India’s energy sector. It showcases how we can deliver large-scale, clean energy infrastructure quickly, efficiently, and sustainably. This project signals a transformative shift toward a greener and more resilient energy landscape.
