In a move towards sustainable industrial growth, Coal India Limited (CIL) has partnered with AM Green to supply 4,500 MW of carbon-free energy to power upcoming green ammonia facilities. The long-term renewable energy supply agreement ranks among the world’s largest, marking a significant step in India’s energy transition journey.
Phased Supply of Solar and Wind Power Across India
The green energy will be delivered through a pan-India portfolio of solar and wind power projects developed by CIL. The phased rollout will include:
- 2,500 MW to 3,000 MW of solar capacity
- 1,500 MW to 2,000 MW of wind capacity
CIL will develop solar installations in high-irradiation states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan. It will also explore wind projects in southern states to leverage favorable wind corridors. It expects to invest ₹25,000 crore in this initiative. The move highlights its strategic shift from a coal-dominant entity to an integrated energy provider.
MoU Signed for Long-Term Renewable Energy Supply
The two companies signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize their collaboration for long-term renewable energy sourcing. The partnership reinforces both companies’ shared vision of enabling large-scale decarbonization of India’s industrial landscape.
Green Energy Plus Storage for Reliable Supply
AM Green aims to ensure uninterrupted green power for its ammonia production. To achieve this, it will integrate the renewable energy supplied by CIL with pumped hydro storage systems. This combination will help smooth out the variability of wind and solar, delivering a steady and reliable power supply to its green ammonia plants.
Industry Leaders Share Vision for a Sustainable Future
P.M. Prasad, Chairman of CIL, said, “Coal remains our mainstay in meeting India’s expanding energy needs in the near term. At the same time, our plans include a proactive role in building a greener and more sustainable future.” This is in consonance with our commitment to become the country’s integrated energy provider.”
AM Green, promoted by the founders of Greenko Group, plans to produce 5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This is equivalent to 1 MTPA of green hydrogen—representing 20% of India’s national target under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko and AM Green, added, “We are delighted to partner with CIL on one of the world’s largest carbon-free, renewable energy supply contracts. We aim to become one of the most cost-competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules in the world.” According to the press release, the landmark collaboration highlights the scale of India’s green hydrogen ambitions. It also positions CIL as a key player in the nation’s low-carbon energy future.
