Koppö Energia Selects thyssenkrupp Uhde for Green Methanol Technology

Koppö Energia Oy has taken a major step toward sustainable fuel production by selecting thyssenkrupp Uhde’s uhde® green methanol technology for its upcoming power-to-X (P2X) project in Kristinestad, Finland. As part of the agreement, thyssenkrupp Uhde will also deliver the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the plant.

Pioneering E-Methanol Production to Support Green Fuels

The planned facility will produce up to 450 metric tons per day (mtpd) of e-methanol in multiple grades tailored to support the maritime and e-gasoline fuel markets. The project aims to contribute to decarbonising transportation and advancing Finland’s green energy goals.

thyssenkrupp Uhde Brings Proven Technology and Expertise

“We are proud that our technology and implementation know-how will contribute to this pioneering project by Koppö Energia Oy,” said Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde. “This is an excellent proof point for cross-industrial cooperation in establishing green methanol as a sustainable fuel,” Håkansson added.

Green Methanol: Clean, Efficient, and Low-Carbon

Unlike grey methanol, which is derived from natural gas, green methanol—or e-methanol—is produced by hydrogenating captured CO₂ using renewable hydrogen. The hydrogen required for the Koppö project will come from a 200 MW water electrolysis plant powered by green electricity.

A waste incineration facility in Vaasa, Finland will source the CO₂. After capturing and liquefying it, trucks will transport it to the P2X plant in Kristinestad, closing the carbon loop.

Integrated Approach Ensures Project Success

Koppö Energia emphasized the importance of choosing a partner with both technological capabilities and integration expertise. “We are very pleased to cooperate with thyssenkrupp Uhde,” said Thomas Zirngibl, Director at Koppö Energia. “They bring the right technologies and the integration skills to ensure a smooth tie-in and successful project delivery.”

Economic and Ecological Edge

The uhde® green methanol technology offers significant economic and environmental advantages. With high carbon and hydrogen efficiencies and a patented process that minimizes purge gas, the system delivers a lower carbon footprint. It also enhances project profitability. As per the company press release, the collaboration marks a milestone in Europe’s green fuel transition. It merges industrial innovation with climate-conscious design.
