India marked National Technology Day 2025 on May 11, celebrating key milestones in its technological journey—from the historic nuclear tests of Operation Shakti (1998) to the maiden flight of the indigenously developed Hansa-3 aircraft. This year’s theme, “YANTRA – Yugantar for Advancing New Technology, Research & Acceleration,” reflects a decisive shift from being a technology adopter to emerging as a global innovation leader.

YANTRA: A Symbol of Epochal Transformation

The term YANTRA embodies both mechanical sophistication and systemic power, while Yugantar signifies a transformational era. Together, they represent India’s intent to lead the next wave of innovation across critical domains such as deep-tech, advanced manufacturing, AI, and defence technology.

More Than a Commemoration: A Platform for Progress

National Technology Day is not just a remembrance of the past. It is a strategic platform to showcase India’s scientific excellence, foster industry-academia collaboration, and amplify the nation’s focus on transformative R&D. This year’s observance comes in the context of Operation Sindoor, underlining how advanced defence technologies are strengthening India’s military capabilities.

Building a Digitally Resilient Nation

The manufacturing sector, vital to India’s economic aspirations, stands at the cusp of a tech-led transformation. Pravir Dahiya, CTO at Tata Teleservices, emphasized, “Technology is not just a tool; it’s a catalyst for inclusive growth.” His colleague, Avinash Gabriel, SVP – Carrier Business, echoed the need for “co-opetition”—a blend of cooperation and competition—to bridge digital divides and empower underserved populations.

AI, Cloud, and Automation Reshape Industry

Technologies such as cloud computing, AI, and 5G are transforming production lines and IT infrastructure. Piyush Goel, CEO of Beyond Key, stated, “This day highlights the power of intelligent automation in streamlining business through AI, cloud, and analytics.” Similarly, Siva Balakrishnan, CEO of Vserve, pointed out the growing role of AI in revolutionizing e-commerce, making retail smarter and more responsive.

Addressing the Skills Gap in Manufacturing

While innovation drives growth, it must be supported by a skilled workforce. Parminder Singh, Country Head – Design and Manufacturing, Autodesk India & SAARC, warned that, “With automation and digital design transforming manufacturing, bridging the skills gap is now a strategic imperative.” Industry-academia partnerships and targeted skilling programs are essential to meet this demand.

Smart and Sustainable Innovation

Innovation today must also be environmentally responsible. Alok Nigam, MD at Brother International India, stressed that “It’s not just about breakthroughs—it’s about their long-term impact.” He called for sustainable design and production practices. Reinforcing this, Ajeya Motaganahalli, VP Engineering and MD India R&D at Pure Storage, highlighted the need to build technology that serves both business and the planet.

Technological Sovereignty Through Defence R&D

India’s focus on “Defence Sovereignty” is tightly linked to its technological progress. Operation Sindoor showcased how precision tech and domestic defence manufacturing play a pivotal role in securing national interests. Discussions at the National Quality Conclave further highlighted the push for stringent quality standards in defence equipment and infrastructure.

Data-Driven Transformation Across Sectors

The power of AI and data is also shaping critical sectors. Mohan Ramaswamy, Co-founder and CEO at Rubix Data Sciences, noted that India is “making bold strides—from AI in healthcare and education to manufacturing its first semiconductor chips.” Data is becoming a core asset in decision-making, optimization, and innovation.

Innovation Rooted in Nation-Building

Driving this technological shift is India’s entrepreneurial spirit. Payal Nambiar, Founder and Director of B-Square, said, “On National Technology Day, we’re reminded that India’s strength lies not just in innovation—but in the spirit behind it.” Entrepreneurs, supported by policy and investment, are leading the charge toward a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).

Looking Ahead: From Promise to Leadership

National Technology Day 2025, under the theme YANTRA, serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of technology. As India advances, success will hinge on its ability to foster collaboration, strengthen R&D, champion sustainability, and cultivate talent. As reported by manufacturingtodayindia.com, with these pillars in place, India is well on its way to becoming a global technology powerhouse.
