Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd (AVTL) announced plans to develop a brownfield ammonia terminal at its existing Pipavav port location in India. Marking a significant milestone, the facility will become the country’s first independent ammonia storage terminal—positioning India as a key player in the global ammonia trade.

Catering to Fertilizer and Future Energy Markets

The terminal will initially support the import of ammonia, primarily serving the growing demands of India’s fertilizer industry. Beyond fertilizers, ammonia is emerging as a critical carrier for hydrogen, making it an essential element in the global energy transition. In alignment with this shift, the facility’s designers are also preparing it to handle green ammonia exports in the future. This move further supports India’s infrastructure development goals for clean energy.

Designed as a Third-Party, Open Access Facility

Planned as a third-party, independent terminal, the facility will offer approximately 36,000 metric tons of ammonia storage capacity. Its open-access model allows multiple customers to tap into global ammonia supply chains, offering flexibility, competitive logistics, and improved market connectivity.

Commissioning Timeline and Investment

The ammonia terminal is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. AVTL is fully funding the project, with a total investment of approximately ₹5.3 billion. As reported by globenewswire.com, the investment underlines AVTL’s commitment to building future-ready infrastructure that supports both traditional industries and the evolving green energy ecosystem.
