IIT Bombay is set to open its first international centre in Japan in collaboration with Tohoku University. Scheduled to commence operations next year, the initiative marks IIT Bombay’s entry onto the global academic stage.
Focus on Advanced Research and Dual Degrees
The new centre, officially named the Tohoku University–IIT Bombay Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE), will begin by offering joint PhD programmes in its initial phase. MTech courses will be introduced in subsequent phases, further expanding academic opportunities for students. The two institutions signed the joint agreement on April 15, solidifying their commitment to academic and research cooperation.
Collaboration to Drive Innovation in Key Sectors
The institute aims to become a hub for collaborative research and innovation. The partnership will facilitate student and faculty exchanges and focus on areas of mutual strategic interest including:
*Sustainable energy
*Artificial intelligence
*Materials science
*Disaster resilience
And more
The academic-industrial collaboration seeks to blend cutting-edge research with real-world applications, supporting both nations’ innovation agendas.
Joining the Ranks of Global IITs
With this centre, IIT Bombay joins other Indian Institutes of Technology in expanding their international presence. IIT Delhi has set up a campus in Abu Dhabi, while IIT Madras has established one in Zanzibar. IIT Bombay’s move to Japan further strengthens India’s growing network of global educational institutions.
Boosting India-Japan Academic Ties
The launch of JIE also aligns with Japan’s broader efforts to strengthen academic links with India. Japan’s education ministry and the University of Tokyo have partnered to provide financial assistance to around 270 Indian graduate students, while intensifying student recruitment across South Asia. The effort is part of Japan’s long-term plan to internationalise its campuses, attract 400,000 international students by 2033, and send 500,000 Japanese students abroad.
Student Mobility Between India and Japan on the Rise
According to official data, 1,302 Indian students enrolled in Japanese institutions in 2022, showing a steady recovery from the pandemic slump. Prior to COVID-19, that number stood at 1,761 in 2019, dropped to 552 in 2020, and hit a low of 193 in 2021.
In contrast, fewer than 800 Japanese students currently study in India, most of them in short-term programmes. As reported by thepienews.com, nevertheless, Indian students remain crucial to Japan’s global education strategy, helping to deepen bilateral academic and cultural ties.
