Spray Engineering Devices Ltd. (SEDL), an Indian clean-tech engineering company specializing in thermal heat recovery and biomass valorisation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Burundi to set up a modern 1,000 TCD (tons crushed per day) sugarcane processing facility in the East African nation.

Advancing Sustainable Sugar Production in East Africa

Under the agreement, SEDL will deploy its proprietary, energy-efficient sugar processing and water-conservation technologies in Burundi. The project reflects a broader goal of promoting sustainable industrial development while enhancing food security and agricultural productivity in the region.

Empowering Local Agriculture and Communities

As part of the collaboration, SEDL will assist in introducing high-yielding sugarcane varieties tailored to local conditions. The company will also provide hands-on training for farmers in modern cultivation and harvesting practices, helping to modernize Burundi’s agricultural landscape through capacity building and knowledge transfer. “This collaboration represents a shared commitment to advancing sustainable industrial development, strengthening local agriculture, and contributing to Burundi’s long-term economic growth,” said Vivek Verma, Managing Director, SEDL.

Driving Economic Growth Through Strategic Partnership

The planned facility will produce approximately 100 tonnes of sugar per day, substantially boosting Burundi’s domestic sugar supply and reducing its dependence on imports. In addition to production, the project will generate rural employment, enhance energy security, and stimulate regional economic development.

Comprehensive Scope of Collaboration

The MoU outlines shared responsibilities across key areas, including:

*Investment and infrastructure development

*Technology transfer and implementation

*Long-term operations and capacity building

As per the press release, SEDL and the Republic of Burundi will work closely with regional partners and financial institutions. They will also engage agricultural stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution, strong community involvement, and lasting socio-economic impact.
