Responding to the government’s call for students to “spend one day as a scientist,” the Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organized a nationwide open day on 7–8 August 2025. The event, titled S.H.I.N.E. – Science, Health and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers, was held across ICMR institutes and DHR-Model Rural Health Research Units (MRHRUs).

Massive Student Participation Across India

The initiative welcomed 13,150 students from grades 9–12, representing over 300 schools across 39 districts in 16 states and union territories. Students visited ICMR facilities to explore the world of health and biomedical research, learn about ICMR’s contributions to national health, and gain inspiration to pursue careers in science and public health—supporting India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.

Igniting Scientific Curiosity

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, DHR and Director General, ICMR, called the initiative “a unique opportunity to ignite scientific curiosity, foster innovation, and inspire the next generation of health researchers.” “It is not just a visit—it’s an invitation to step into the shoes of a scientist,” Dr. Bahl said. He encouraged students to observe, question, and experience the spirit of inquiry, urging them to interact with scientists, explore laboratories, and witness India’s progress in medical and health research.

Engaging and Interactive Experiences

The SHINE programme featured guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, video presentations, and live demonstrations of ongoing projects. Students interacted directly with ICMR scientists, gaining insights into their research journeys, expertise, and daily work in public health. To make the event more relatable, a mascot named Dr. Curio served as a friendly guide throughout the day.

Showcasing India’s Health Research Achievements

Students also viewed four specially curated short films highlighting ICMR’s flagship initiatives:

*Development of Covaxin – India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine

*iDRONE – innovative healthcare delivery through drones

*TB Elimination Efforts – combating one of the oldest health challenges

*Vishanu Yudh Abhyas – a nationwide mock drill for pandemic preparedness

Honouring a Legendary Scientist

The second day of the event, 8 August, coincided with the 104th birth anniversary of Dr. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami. He was a distinguished Indian medical scientist, pathologist, writer, and former Director General of ICMR. His pioneering work continues to inspire generations of researchers, adding significance to the occasion.

Reinforcing Commitment to Public Health and Education

As reported by mohfw.gov.in, through the SHINE initiative, ICMR reaffirmed its commitment to fostering scientific curiosity among young learners. It also promoted awareness of the vital role of research in advancing public health. The programme showcased how curiosity, evidence, and ambition can drive India’s scientific future.
