Hindustan Zinc Joins ICMM as First Indian Member

Hindustan Zinc Limited, an integrated zinc producer and India’s only major zinc mining company, has become the first Indian firm to join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). This marks ICMM’s first new member since 2021 and signals the council’s growing engagement in South Asia.

Joining After Rigorous Global Assessment

Hindustan Zinc’s induction followed a comprehensive independent review by ICMM’s Independent Expert Review Panel. It was later approved by the organisation’s CEO Council. As part of its membership, Hindustan Zinc has committed to ICMM’s forty Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance expectations. These require external validation for all operational assets.

Leadership Speak

Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, mentioned, “This milestone reinforces our dedication to responsible mining and gives us a platform to collaborate with global leaders in shaping the future of the mining sector, particularly in advancing the energy transition.”

Arun Misra, CEO and Whole-time Director, added, “We are embedding transparency, innovation, and global best practices into our operations to deliver long-term positive impacts for communities and the environment.” Rohitesh Dhawan, ICMM President and CEO, welcomed HZL. He noted that the addition strengthens ICMM’s regional presence and reflects rising interest from South Asian companies in responsible mining.

Recognised Leader in Sustainable Mining

Hindustan Zinc operates underground silver-lead-zinc mines, smelters, and supporting infrastructure across northwest India. Industry bodies and sustainability organisations have recognised the company for its achievements in tailings management and decarbonisation. They have also commended its efforts in circular economy practices and in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As reported by manufacturingtodayindia.com, in 2024, HZL topped the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment in its sector for the second consecutive year. It also holds Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-validated climate goals aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, aims for net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, and has pioneered low-carbon zinc production through renewable energy under its EcoZen initiative, supported by Environmental Product Declarations.
