Residents in various zones of Chennai will soon benefit from a major increase in water supply, thanks to the commissioning of a new pipeline from the Chembarambakkam water treatment plant. The pipeline is currently undergoing trial runs.

Project Doubles Daily Water Capacity

With an investment of ₹66.78 crore, the project enables Chennai Metrowater to double its supply capacity—from 265 million litres per day (MLD) to 530 MLD. This upgrade brings the Chembarambakkam plant to its full operational potential.

As per Projects Today, this initiative marks a significant step in improving water availability across critical zones. Areas expected to benefit include Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, and Alandur within Greater Chennai Corporation, as well as Tambaram Corporation, Kundrathur, and Sriperumbudur municipalities.

Extensive Pipeline Network Completed

The new infrastructure includes an 11.7 km pipeline from Chembarambakkam to Porur and an additional 9.2 km stretch from the Poonamallee Bypass Road junction to Koyambedu. Although the project began in 2013, engineers had to overcome logistical challenges, including laying pipes six feet underground.

Officials Inspect Final Phase

On August 20, 2025, Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru inspected the site in anticipation of the project’s official inauguration. He was joined by Minorities Welfare Minister S.M. Nasar, Poonamallee MLA A. Krishnaswamy, local representatives, and senior officials.

With final testing underway, the project is on track to significantly enhance Chennai’s urban water distribution system in the coming weeks.
