Cairn Oil & Gas Champions India’s Energy Self-Sufficiency Drive

Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd, is celebrating sixteen years since the first oil flowed from its Mangala field in Barmer, Rajasthan. Discovered in 2004 and operational since 2009, the Mangala field remains one of India’s most significant energy assets. To date, the field has produced over 535 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), making it India’s largest onshore oil discovery of its time. With 650 mmboe still untapped, Mangala continues to fuel India’s energy needs and power Rajasthan’s economic growth.

Pioneering Innovation and Energy Security

From day one, the Mangala field has been a hub of technological breakthroughs. Cairn built the world’s longest continuously heated and insulated pipeline (705 km), transporting crude from Rajasthan to Gujarat. It also delivered the largest enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project and the biggest jet pump network globally. Cairn remains committed to investing in exploration and recovery improvement to unlock more reserves and ensure sustained production.

Boosting Output with Advanced Recovery Techniques

Recent initiatives underscore Cairn’s focus on efficiency and innovation:

*India’s largest commercial ASP injection increased recovery by 20%, with Phase Two now underway.

*The successful Tight Oil project at Aishwariya will soon be replicated in Barmer Hills.

To achieve this, Cairn collaborated with global leaders like Halliburton, Nabors, Baker Hughes, and Weatherford, bringing cutting-edge technologies and best practices to Barmer. Nearly two dozen technical experts are stationed onsite to drive these projects forward.

Transforming Barmer’s Economy and Communities

Cairn’s operations have transformed Barmer into an economic powerhouse, with the district’s GDP soaring by over 650%. The company has created jobs, supply chain opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods across Rajasthan. Beyond business, Cairn’s social impact programs in healthcare, education, sanitation, and women’s empowerment have touched 197 million lives in six years.

Empowering Women Through Flagship Initiatives

Programs like Jiji Bai, Maru Udaan, and the Handloom Centre have empowered over 6,500 women with skills, entrepreneurship opportunities, and financial literacy. These initiatives are building resilient communities and fostering inclusive growth.

Looking Ahead

As a key private player in India’s energy sector, Cairn aims to contribute 50% of the nation’s domestic oil and gas production. As reported by manufacturingtodayindia.com, with a strong emphasis on technology, innovation, and sustainability, the company continues to advance India’s energy security goals while driving a greener future.
