Signalling a major shift from tradition, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) will organize the first-ever Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) in November. This new initiative will provide a fresh platform for scientific and technological discourse, focusing on cutting-edge research and innovation.

ESTIC to Potentially Replace Indian Science Congress

The Indian Science Congress, India’s oldest congregation of scientists with a legacy that predates Independence, has seen its prominence decline over the years. They held the last edition in 2023. Now, ESTIC may serve as its replacement, marking a new chapter in India’s scientific engagement.

A senior official confirmed, “You could see it as a replacement of the Indian Science Congress.”

How ESTIC Differs from IISF

Since 2015, the government has supported the India International Science Festival (IISF). Several science-related departments and Vijnana Bharti, a science popularization body affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), jointly organize the event.

However, an official explained the key difference between the two, “The IISF is more of a festival, a mela, meant to popularize science among students and young people. It is not a forum where scientists and technologists can discuss bigger themes of science, technology and innovation.” This year, Panjab University, Chandigarh, will host the IISF. The event will continue its mission to engage the youth and spark scientific curiosity.

A New Era for Scientific Dialogue

As reported by thehindu.com, with ESTIC, the government aims to create a serious platform for high-level discussions. The platform will focus on emerging scientific trends, technological breakthroughs, and innovation strategies. This move reflects India’s commitment to fostering research excellence and shaping the future of science and technology.
