Specialty chemicals company LANXESS significantly reduced the carbon footprint of several key products – benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, and sodium benzoate – manufactured at its Botlek site in the Netherlands. Marketed under the Kalaguard SB, Kalama, Purox B, and Purox S brands, these products are now produced entirely using low-emission electricity. By eliminating fossil fuels from the production process, LANXESS is advancing the decarbonization of the downstream value chain. These products are widely used in food, beverages, pet food, personal care, and home care applications.
Enabling Customers to Meet Sustainability Goals
Michael Zobel, Head of the LANXESS Flavors and Fragrances business unit, stated, “Our customers are under increasing pressure to improve their carbon footprint. With low-emission production in Botlek, we enable them to use CO₂-optimized solutions – without compromising on the quality or availability of our products.” His comments underline LANXESS’s role in helping industries adopt climate-friendly alternatives without sacrificing performance.
Broader Emission Reduction Efforts
The Botlek initiative builds on LANXESS’s wider strategy to convert its production sites to emission-free or sustainable energy sources. For instance:
*At Krefeld-Uerdingen (Germany), the site already operates on renewable energy.
*At Nagda (India), electricity and steam are largely generated from biomass.
Such measures play a key role in reducing the company’s Scope 2 emissions globally.
Certified Sustainability Through ISCC PLUS
LANXESS has also secured ISCC PLUS certification for all sites in its Flavors & Fragrances business unit. This certification ensures transparency in the use of sustainable raw materials across the value chain. Using the mass balance method, LANXESS can lower the carbon footprint of its products while maintaining their original quality and properties. ISCC PLUS is recognized as a central sustainability benchmark in the chemical industry, strengthening LANXESS’s credibility as a responsible supplier.
Expanding the Scopeblue Label
Since early 2024, the Flavors & Fragrances business unit has been offering variants of its entire portfolio under the “Scopeblue” sustainability label. Products carrying this label either:
*Consist of at least 50% sustainable raw materials, or
*Have a carbon footprint at least 50% lower than conventional alternatives.
As per company press release, the initiative ensures that customers can identify and adopt climate-friendly solutions with confidence.
