Young Tinker Foundation Honoured for Promoting STEM Education in Rural India

The Young Tinker Foundation was recently recognised with the BusinessLine Young Changemaker Award for its outstanding efforts in empowering high school students in rural areas through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. The award highlights the foundation’s innovative approach to fostering problem-solving skills and scientific curiosity among young learners.

Addressing Challenges in Rural STEM Education

While the number of students opting for science after Class X has been rising — thanks to government policies, new textbooks, and improved labs — significant challenges persist in rural areas. Differences in quality of education and access to resources remain barriers to nurturing scientific aptitude.

The Young Tinker Foundation is actively bridging this gap by equipping students with skills and a problem-solving mindset. “Our main focus is to make students problem solvers, and we teach them two principles — think the unthinkable and learn from failures,” said Founder Anil Pradhan (28).

From Engineer to Changemaker

Odisha-born Pradhan trained as a civil engineer at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology. Rather than pursuing a corporate career, he followed his dream of spreading STEM education in rural communities, giving birth to the Young Tinker Foundation. The non-profit runs programs largely funded through corporate CSR initiatives, providing schools with learning kits and operating Tinker on Wheels, an AI-powered mobile learning lab that brings STEM education directly to students. Pradhan’s spouse, Vaishali Pradhan, co-founder of the foundation, develops teaching tools and hands-on projects to address real-life problems, enhancing the learning experience.

Impact and Vision

Since its inception, the foundation has positively impacted over 2.7 lakh students, reaching children in villages and urban slums. “Students from these areas have immense potential. We want to nurture them so they become the next APJ Abdul Kalam or CV Raman. For that, we aim to build an institution and scale it nationwide,” said Anil Pradhan. During his award acknowledgment, Pradhan shared a heartwarming moment: “One of the six nominees for the Young Changemaker Award, Rishikesh Amit Nayak, is my student. My work is now being recognised alongside my student, and in the future, they will also win this award,” he said, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, through innovative programs, hands-on learning, and a commitment to scientific thinking and problem-solving, the Young Tinker Foundation is not only addressing educational disparities but also empowering rural youth to dream big and pursue careers in STEM fields.
