Chemical emergencies represent a growing threat to public health, environmental safety, and societal stability, highlighting the urgent need for robust national preparedness and response mechanisms. In response, the Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, alongside senior officials from various ministries, national agencies, and experts from industry, academia, and the private sector, launched specialized training modules on Public Health Management of Chemical Emergencies at Nirman Bhawan.

Enhancing Preparedness in a Rapidly Growing Industrial Economy

As India’s industry and economy expand, authorities must maintain up-to-date preparedness measures for chemical incidents. The newly launched modules equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to chemical emergencies, minimizing risks to public health and the environment.

Development of Specialized Training Modules

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), developed three comprehensive modules in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and with technical support from WHO India.

The three modules include:

*Preparedness, Surveillance, and Response for Public Health Management of Chemical Emergencies

*Pre-Hospital Management of Chemical Emergencies

*Medical Management of Chemical Emergencies

The modules are structured to provide practical guidance, operational tools, and strategic frameworks for public health professionals, healthcare workers, emergency responders, and policymakers.

Strengthening National and Global Health Security

By improving the management of chemical incidents, the modules also support core capacities under the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), contributing to both national and global health security. The initiative aligns with India’s broader objective of building a self-reliant and resilient nation. It aims to ensure the country can respond swiftly to public health emergencies.

Collaborative Launch Event

The launch event brought together representatives from:

*Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

*NDMA

*Central government ministries and institutions

*Academic and research organizations

*WHO Country Office for India

Key industry partners

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing chemical emergency preparedness, strengthening multi-sectoral coordination, and promoting resilience across the public health system. As reported by msn.com, the training modules will empower India’s workforce with the expertise to prevent, respond to, and manage chemical emergencies. They aim to ensure timely action, reduce casualties, and maintain public safety. This initiative marks a significant step toward a proactive, coordinated, and resilient approach to chemical emergency management in India.
