BASF Coatings has opened a state-of-the-art laboratory in Würzburg, Germany, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in digitalization, occupational safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The advanced “Lean Lab” concept focuses on developing and producing waterborne basecoats for automotive customers across Europe.

Driving Digital, Flexible, and Sustainable Product Development

With the new facility, BASF Coatings expands its global Lean Lab rollout. “The Lean Lab in Wuerzburg is part of our global rollout. With this infrastructure, we are laying the foundation for modern, digitalized, and flexible product development, reaffirming our commitment to driving innovation and sustainability consistently across all regions,” said Dr. Ralf Otte, Vice President, Global Technology, Automotive OEM Coatings at BASF Coatings. He adds that the project team delivered the concept on time with great dedication.

A Global Concept Tailored to Local Needs

BASF is currently introducing the Lean Lab concept at additional sites worldwide, adapting its structure to suit local requirements. The model follows a clear specialization strategy:

*Process laboratory manages all wet work.

*Product laboratory focuses on customer support and continuous product optimization.

*Laboratory services oversee raw material logistics and supply management.

The division ensures streamlined workflows, faster decision-making, and more efficient product development.

Modern Infrastructure with Full Digital Integration

Every workstation in the laboratory is ergonomically designed and equipped with advanced IT systems. Moreover, all processes are digitally recorded, enabling data-driven efficiency from start to finish. The lab’s central location near production also strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration and speeds up the transition from idea to implementation.

Supporting Future EU Standards and Sustainability Targets

The Lean Lab already complies with upcoming EU requirements related to raw material classification and occupational safety. Beyond regulatory readiness, it significantly boosts sustainability. Optimized material flow, direct logistics connections, and intelligently centralized space help save 25.1 tons of CO₂ annually. Consumption-based material supply further enhances resource efficiency.

Automated Systems Improve Transparency and Efficiency

Custom laboratory software and an RFID-based warehouse system enable full transparency and automated data capture. Even warehouse management—including raw material ordering—is fully digitalized. Meanwhile, a modern working café enhances creativity, teamwork, and employee well-being.

Strengthening Würzburg as a Key Global Hub

As per the press release, the Würzburg team develops and produces waterborne basecoats for automotive OEM customers worldwide. With the new Lean Lab, BASF Coatings further strengthens the site’s position as an innovation hub and a highly attractive employer in the region.
