Dr. Markus Kamieth Takes the Helm at BASF

Dr. Markus Kamieth now leads BASF SE as Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and CEO, reinforcing the company’s strategic direction and global leadership in the chemical industry. As per basf.com, he stepped into this top role in April 2024 after a long and varied career within the company. 

From Scientist to Global Leader

Born in Dinslaken, Germany, in 1970, Markus Kamieth completed his doctorate in organic chemistry at the University of Essen before joining BASF in 1999. He began his career conducting research in specialty chemicals, a field where he quickly developed expertise that helped fuel his later leadership roles. 

Climbing the Corporate Ladder

Over the years, Kamieth gained extensive international experience. He served in diverse roles across Germany, the United States and Asia, which progressively broadened his operational and strategic insight:

  • He managed business units such as Performance Chemicals in North America and led the global Coatings division. 
  • In 2017, BASF appointed him to its Board of Executive Directors. 
  • In 2020, he oversaw BASF’s operations in Asia from Hong Kong before returning to Germany to assume the CEO position. 

Leadership Responsibilities and Vision

As CEO, Dr. Kamieth now oversees key corporate functions including Corporate Development, Legal Affairs, Compliance, Human Resources, Investor Relations and Communications at BASF’s headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany. He leads the company during a period of transformation and strategic recalibration in a highly competitive global market.
