Honeywell will provide advanced petrochemical process technologies and catalysts to Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, strengthening the production of plastics and detergents. The collaboration is set to enhance regional energy security by reducing import dependence, while also accelerating industrial growth and reinforcing supply chains across West Africa.
Boosting Propylene Production with Oleflex™ Technology
As part of the expansion, Dangote will deploy Honeywell UOP’s Oleflex™ technology to significantly increase propylene output. The system will enable the refinery to produce an additional 7,50,000 metric tons of propylene per year. The increased capacity will directly support the manufacturing of packaging materials, consumer goods, and various industrial products, thereby meeting rising market demand.
Expanding Detergent Feedstock Production
In addition to propylene, Dangote will integrate a suite of Honeywell UOP petrochemical technologies and catalysts to produce 4,00,000 metric tons per year of linear alkylbenzene (LAB). LAB is a critical raw material used in detergents and surfactants for both household and industrial cleaning applications. Once fully operational, the LAB plant at Lekki is expected to become one of the largest facilities of its kind globally.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Industrial Growth
According to Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, the collaboration supports Nigeria’s long-term industrial vision. He emphasized that Honeywell’s technologies will help meet growing demand for consumer and industrial goods, while positioning Dangote as a global supplier. Moreover, the project is expected to drive economic development and enhance supply chain independence across the region.
Long-Standing Partnership Driving Expansion
Honeywell and Dangote share a strong, ongoing partnership focused on advancing refinery and petrochemical capabilities in Nigeria. Over the years, the collaboration has incorporated advanced process technologies, automation systems, catalysts, and engineering expertise. Building on this foundation, Dangote is now working to expand its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, a move that could make it the world’s largest petroleum refinery.
Driving Efficiency and Long-Term Value
Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, highlighted that Dangote’s investments in advanced technologies and digital solutions are key to maximizing efficiency and throughput. He noted that Honeywell’s solutions will enhance operational reliability and production performance across both existing and new facilities. Furthermore, the collaboration demonstrates how cutting-edge technologies can help manufacturers meet the growing global demand for essential petrochemical products.
A Strategic Step Toward Global Competitiveness
Overall, this expansion underscores Dangote’s ambition to become a leading global petrochemical producer. As per the press release, by leveraging Honeywell’s advanced technologies, the project not only strengthens regional manufacturing capabilities but also positions West Africa as a significant player in the global petrochemical value chain.
