ARLANXEO and Covestro are strengthening their collaboration to accelerate the development of more sustainable synthetic rubber solutions. By integrating ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine supplied by Covestro into the production of chloroprene rubber (CR), ARLANXEO has significantly reduced the environmental impact of its Baypren® product portfolio. This transition marks an important step toward a more sustainable rubber value chain while supporting industries in achieving their climate goals.
Renewable-Based Chlorine Enables Lower Carbon Production
Covestro’s ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine is produced using electricity generated from renewable sources, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the manufacturing process. Since January 2026, ARLANXEO has transitioned its entire CR production to ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine. This milestone reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and responsible sourcing. The shift has resulted in an average reduction of approximately 20% in Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared with 2025 levels, depending on the specific product grade.
Strengthening Transparency Across the Value Chain
“Integrating ISCC PLUS-certified materials into our production is a key step in reducing the environmental footprint of our CR products,” said Niels van der Aar, Head of Sustainability at ARLANXEO. He added that the initiative supports customers with more sustainable material solutions while improving transparency through product environmental footprint data across ARLANXEO’s complete CR portfolio. By providing verified sustainability information, ARLANXEO enables customers to make informed choices while progressing toward their own sustainability targets.
Covestro Supports Sustainable Raw Material Transition
As a strategic chemical supplier, Covestro plays a key role in enabling ARLANXEO’s transition by supplying ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine from its certified production facilities. “At Covestro, we support our customers in reducing emissions across the value chain by providing more sustainable basic chemical raw materials from our ISCC PLUS-certified production sites,” said Moritz Winterstein, Head of Trading Cluster Basic Chemicals EMEA at Covestro. The collaboration demonstrates how certified feedstocks and renewable energy can help reduce environmental impacts in downstream applications while supporting global decarbonization efforts.
Expanding Sustainable Elastomer Solutions
The adoption of ISCC PLUS-certified feedstocks strengthens ARLANXEO’s position as a supplier of sustainable elastomer solutions. These advanced materials are particularly valuable for industries with ambitious climate objectives, including automotive, construction, industrial applications and adhesives and specialty materials. The company also offers Baypren® Eco grades, which combine ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine with ISCC PLUS-certified butadiene. This further reduces environmental impact while maintaining the performance and reliability expected from high-quality rubber materials.
Building a Lower-Carbon Future for Rubber
Through its partnership with Covestro, ARLANXEO continues to advance sustainable innovation in synthetic rubber manufacturing. As per the press release, by combining certified raw materials, renewable energy, and transparent value-chain practices, both companies are helping customers move toward a more circular, low-carbon, and sustainable materials future.
