Odisha Unveils India’s First Integrated 1G-2G Bio-Ethanol Refinery

India is poised to achieve a major milestone in its clean energy transition with the inauguration of first integrated first-generation (1G) and second-generation (2G) bio-ethanol refinery in Bargarh district, Odisha. The ₹1,775 crore refinery will have an annual production capacity of 6.3 crore litres of ethanol. The facility is expected to significantly strengthen India’s biofuel ecosystem while enhancing the country’s energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

First Commercial Facility Integrating 1G and 2G Ethanol Production

Developed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), the refinery is the first commercial plant in India to integrate both 1G and 2G ethanol production technologies within a single facility. The integrated approach enables the plant to produce ethanol from both conventional feedstocks and agricultural residues, improving production flexibility while supporting a more sustainable biofuel value chain.

Converting Agricultural Waste into Clean Fuel

A key highlight of the project is its ability to commercially produce second-generation (2G) ethanol using paddy straw and other lignocellulosic agricultural residues. By converting crop residue into renewable fuel, the refinery will help reduce stubble burning, minimize environmental pollution, generate additional income opportunities for farmers, and promote the circular utilization of agricultural waste.

Supporting India’s Renewable Energy and Sustainability Goals

The commissioning of the integrated refinery marks a significant step in expanding India’s sustainable biofuel production capacity. By combining advanced ethanol technologies with efficient biomass utilization, the facility is expected to play a vital role in achieving the nation’s ethanol blending targets, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthening the transition toward a low-carbon energy future. As reported by chinimandi.com, as India continues to invest in renewable fuels and circular economy initiatives, the Bargarh refinery stands as a landmark project that demonstrates the commercial viability of advanced biofuel technologies while contributing to long-term energy security and environmental sustainability.
