India has approved a major expansion of its strategic petroleum reserves, adding 1.75 million metric tons of storage capacity to strengthen the country’s energy security. The move comes as rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz raise concerns about the stability of global oil supplies.

ONGC Approves Strategic Reserve Expansion

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation announced on July 10 that its board had approved the project, describing it as a project of national importance. The additional storage capacity will enhance India’s emergency crude oil reserves and improve the country’s ability to respond to supply disruptions caused by geopolitical conflicts or interruptions to international shipping routes.

Rising Concerns Over Strait of Hormuz

The decision follows renewed instability in the Gulf region, where military tensions have affected commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway carries nearly 20% of the world’s seaborne crude oil and a significant portion of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. As a result, major oil-importing nations, including India, are increasingly focused on securing reliable access to energy supplies.

India’s Dependence on Imported Crude Oil

India is the world’s third-largest crude oil importer and depends on overseas suppliers for more than 85% of its oil consumption. A substantial share of these imports originates in the Middle East and passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making the country particularly vulnerable to disruptions along the route. Therefore, expanding strategic petroleum reserves is considered a critical step in reducing supply risks.

Role of Strategic Petroleum Reserves

Strategic petroleum reserves provide emergency oil supplies during periods of conflict, natural disasters, or major market disruptions. They help stabilize domestic fuel availability and reduce the immediate impact of sudden interruptions in crude oil imports while governments arrange alternative supply sources. By increasing storage capacity, India aims to improve its resilience against future energy shocks.

India’s Existing Storage Infrastructure

Over the past decade, India has steadily expanded its strategic oil reserve network as part of a broader energy security strategy.  In addition, the government is developing further reserve capacity in other regions of the country.

Supporting India’s Long-Term Energy Security

The latest approval aligns with India’s broader strategy of diversifying energy sources, expanding storage infrastructure, and improving preparedness against geopolitical risks. As reported by khaama.com, by strengthening strategic petroleum reserves, the country aims to enhance energy security, protect its economy from global supply disruptions, and maintain greater stability in domestic fuel markets.
