The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) for the long-term supply of sulphuric acid from BPCL’s upcoming sulphuric acid plant at Kochi Refinery. The agreement will help FACT secure a stable supply of a critical raw material for its fertiliser operations and support future expansion plans.
Agreement Signed in Presence of CMDs
The MoU was signed in the presence of Sanjay Khanna, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, and S. Sakthimani, Chairman and Managing Director of FACT. Senior officials from both organisations described the partnership as a strategic step toward improving resource optimisation, operational efficiency, and long-term business growth. Following the signing ceremony, leaders from FACT and BPCL held detailed discussions on expanding cooperation through future initiatives. Because both companies operate in Kochi, they explored ways to leverage their geographical proximity and develop stronger synergies in areas of mutual interest.
BPCL Supply to Reduce FACT’s Sulphuric Acid Gap
FACT currently produces around 5.5 lakh tons of sulphuric acid annually against a requirement of approximately 7.5 lakh tons. Under the agreement, BPCL will supply 1.5 lakh tons of sulphuric acid, helping FACT bridge a significant portion of its existing deficit. FACT is also moving ahead with expansion projects that will require an additional 2 lakh tonnes of sulphuric acid. Consequently, the company expects its total sulphuric acid shortfall to rise to around 3.5 lakh tonnes by FY2027-28.
BPCL to Establish Its First Sulphuric Acid Plant
For BPCL, the agreement creates a pathway to establish its first sulphuric acid plant at Kochi Refinery. Once operational, the facility will make BPCL one of the few refineries in India capable of producing sulphuric acid. BPCL officials stated that the initiative goes beyond launching a new product. Instead, it reflects the company’s strategy to offer customer-centric, value-added industrial solutions alongside its conventional fuel business.
Supporting India’s Industrial Growth
By expanding into sulphuric acid production, BPCL aims to address the evolving requirements of industrial customers while contributing to India’s broader manufacturing and infrastructure growth. As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, FACT will benefit from improved raw material security, which is expected to support fertiliser production, operational stability, and future capacity expansion.
