Grasim Industries is set to significantly expand its renewable energy footprint after its wholly owned subsidiary, Aditya Birla Renewables Ltd, signed a definitive agreement to acquire Sprng Energy from Shell in a transaction valued at ₹17,200 crore (approximately $1.8 billion). The acquisition ranks among the largest renewable energy mergers and acquisitions in India and will substantially accelerate the Aditya Birla Group’s clean energy expansion strategy.

ABReN’s Renewable Capacity to Reach 9.3 GW

ABReN will add Sprng Energy’s contracted renewable energy portfolio of approximately 5 GW to its existing 4.4 GW portfolio. This expanded platform will give ABReN a diversified presence across utility-scale and commercial & industrial (C&I) renewable energy segments.

Why Grasim Is Acquiring Sprng Energy

Instead of building projects entirely through greenfield development, Grasim is acquiring an established operating platform with contracted capacity, operational assets and an active development pipeline. As a result, the acquisition will accelerate renewable capacity expansion, strengthen utility-scale operations, enhance C&I renewable offerings, support the group’s energy transition goals and reduce execution timelines compared with greenfield development.

Kumar Mangalam Birla: Path to 20 GW+

“This acquisition brings together two highly complementary platforms and marks an important milestone in ABReN’s evolution. Together, we will have a diversified portfolio and a deep development pipeline that puts us on course to scale to 20 GW-plus in the coming years,” said Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group. He added that the transaction positions the group to participate meaningfully in one of the world’s largest ongoing energy transitions.

Aryaman Vikram Birla: Accelerating National-Scale Growth

“The acquisition is a pivotal moment in ABReN’s evolution, rapidly accelerating our ambition to build a top-tier renewable energy platform at national scale. By integrating Sprng Energy’s high-quality utilities portfolio with our C&I capabilities, we are significantly enhancing both the strength and resilience of our combined platform,” added Aryaman Vikram Birla, Director, Aditya Birla Group and Aditya Birla Renewables. He also noted that the company has nearly achieved its 10 GW renewable capacity target ahead of schedule and is now preparing to double capacity over the next few years. As reported by fortuneindia.com, the acquisition will deepen Grasim’s presence in utility-scale renewable energy while complementing ABReN’s established C&I business. Consequently, the Aditya Birla Group will emerge as one of India’s leading integrated renewable energy platforms with a stronger operational base, larger development pipeline and enhanced ability to support the country’s clean energy transition.
