Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) launched its 33,870 tons per annum (TPA) phosphoric acid plant at Dahej, Gujarat. The facility will expand domestic production of purified and food-grade phosphoric acid, strengthen the company’s downstream chemical portfolio and reduce India’s reliance on imports for key industrial applications. The launch marks a shift from construction and commissioning to operational integration, supporting GACL’s efforts to improve chlorine utilisation and strengthen its chemical manufacturing capabilities.

Phosphoric Acid Plant Strengthens Domestic Supply

The phosphoric acid facility is expected to enhance the availability of purified and food-grade phosphoric acid for industrial applications. By expanding domestic production, GACL aims to support key consuming industries while advancing import substitution. Furthermore, the plant strengthens the company’s downstream chemical operations by integrating phosphoric acid production with its existing chemical manufacturing infrastructure at Dahej.

Additional ₹55 Crore HCl Unit to Improve Chlorine Utilisation

Alongside the phosphoric acid project, GACL has approved an additional investment of ₹55 crore to expand its hydrochloric acid (HCl) synthesis capacity. The expansion aims to optimise chlorine utilisation and support phosphoric acid production. Chlorine integration remains an important operational consideration for GACL. By converting surplus or byproduct chlorine into hydrochloric acid for downstream processing, the company can improve resource utilisation and reduce its exposure to fluctuations in merchant chlorine prices.

Integrated Chemical Production to Support Operational Efficiency

The phosphoric acid plant and proposed HCl synthesis expansion form part of GACL’s broader effort to improve integration across its chemical manufacturing operations. More efficient chlorine management can help address operational bottlenecks, improve feedstock utilisation and support greater cost stability. Consequently, these investments could strengthen GACL’s operating efficiency while expanding its presence in value-added chemicals. As reported by sahi.com, with the launch of the 33,870 TPA phosphoric acid facility, GACL is advancing its downstream integration strategy at Dahej, with a focus on domestic supply, import substitution and more efficient utilisation of chemical intermediates.
