Arkema strengthened its climate action strategy after SBTi Services validated its 2050 net-zero target and new science-based emissions reduction targets for 2035. The company is also the first to receive validation under the new Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) guidance specifically developed for the chemical industry. The validation reinforces Arkema’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and accelerating industrial decarbonization while developing lower-carbon solutions to meet evolving customer requirements.

Arkema Commits to Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

As part of its long-term climate strategy, Arkema has established a science-based net-zero target covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company aims to reduce its absolute emissions by 90% by 2050, compared with its 2019 baseline. It will prioritize direct emissions reductions and use carbon neutralization measures only for the remaining 10% of residual emissions, in accordance with SBTi criteria. After achieving its earlier 2030 climate targets through various decarbonization initiatives, Arkema has established new intermediate targets for 2035. These commitments align with a 1.5°C emissions reduction pathway under the Paris Agreement.

New 2035 Targets for Scope 1 and 2 Emissions

Arkema has committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 58.07% by 2035, compared with the 2019 baseline. As part of this commitment, the company has established two specific emissions reduction targets:

Non-primary chemical production: Reduce absolute Scope 1 emissions from the production of non-primary chemicals by 22.39%. This target covers all the Group’s production activities, as defined under the SBTi Chemical Sector Pathways and Implementation Criteria V1.0.

Remaining Scope 1 and 2 emissions: Reduce all other absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 78.44%.

These targets will guide the company’s efforts to improve production efficiency and reduce emissions across its industrial operations.

Targeting a 68.57% Reduction in Scope 3 Emissions

In addition to reducing emissions from its own operations, Arkema aims to address indirect emissions across its value chain. The company has committed to reducing its absolute Scope 3 emissions by 68.57% by 2035, compared with the 2019 baseline. To achieve this target, Arkema will gradually reduce its most emissions-intensive activities and shift towards lower-carbon alternatives. It will also work closely with suppliers to encourage and support their decarbonization initiatives.

€400 Million Investment to Accelerate Decarbonization

Arkema’s climate strategy is supported by a cumulative investment commitment of up to €400 million over the 2022–2035 period. The investment will primarily support process improvements and energy efficiency projects across its manufacturing operations. Additionally, the company will continue transitioning its energy mix towards lower-carbon sources to reduce emissions associated with energy consumption. Through these initiatives, Arkema aims to accelerate industrial decarbonization while strengthening the sustainability of its manufacturing operations and supply chain.

Arkema Reaffirms Its Long-Term Climate Commitment

Emmanuelle Bromet, Sustainable Development Vice President of Arkema, said, “The validation by SBTi Services of our 2035 and 2050 targets marks another important milestone in our climate journey. We are proud of the progress achieved thanks to the commitment of our teams and partners, and remain fully determined to maintain this momentum in order to help build a more sustainable and resilient industry.”

Strengthening Sustainable Development in the Chemical Industry

Arkema’s validated climate targets represent an important milestone in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and value chain. Moreover, becoming the first company to receive validation under the new SBTi chemical industry guidance highlights the growing importance of sector-specific decarbonization pathways. As per the press release, by combining emissions reduction targets with investments in energy efficiency, cleaner energy and lower-carbon products, Arkema aims to support the chemical industry’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
