AM Green Ammonia B.V. secured the final investment decision (FID) for its inaugural million-ton (MMt) green ammonia project, located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
This marks the beginning of the company’s ambitious goal to achieve a production capacity of five MMtpy of green ammonia by 2030, which is equivalent to around one MMtpy of green hydrogen. The project’s total expenditure will cover the establishment of a green hydrogen generation unit and its conversion into green ammonia, along with all necessary infrastructure and balance of plant components.
The project will be based at an existing urea plant in Kakinada. The facility will be transformed into a green ammonia production unit, with operations expected to commence in the latter half of 2026.
The Kakinada facility has received pre-certification from CertifHy, confirming its compliance with the EU RFNBO requirements for green ammonia, which includes criteria like additionality and hourly matching of renewable energy sources. The majority of the output from this facility is intended for export to European markets.
AM Green Ammonia B.V. has already secured offtake agreements for the project with major industry players such as Uniper, Yara, Keppel, and others, for various green hydrogen applications.
The company has arranged the necessary 1,300-MW round-the-clock carbon-free power, supported by 4,500 MW of solar and wind hybrid capacity, in conjunction with 950 MW of pumped storage plant (PSP) capacity.
As reported by hydrocarbonprocessing.com, beyond the Kakinada project, AM Green is also concentrating on green ammonia production across multiple locations in India, aiming to reach its five MMtpy green ammonia target by 2030.
This effort is expected to significantly contribute to the net zero objectives in India and OECD markets, with the planned capacity representing roughly one MMtpy of green hydrogen – about a fifth of India’s target under the national green hydrogen mission and 10% of Europe’s target for green hydrogen imports by 2030.
Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green commented, “The FID status of our Kakinada plant highlights our dedication to delivering carbon-free energy solutions worldwide while adhering to stringent standards such as the EU RFNBO norms. This is a pivotal achievement for AM Green, strengthening our position as a leading energy transition solutions provider, supporting the decarbonization of industries like refineries, shipping, fertilizers, power generation, chemicals, and more through affordable green molecules and derivatives”.
