Balrampur Chini Mills plans to start commercial production of polylactic acid (PLA) by the end of 2026. The company aims to generate nearly 50% of its revenue from non-sugar businesses within the next three years.
The company laid the foundation stone for its PLA biopolymer manufacturing facility in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. The ₹2,850 crore project marks the company’s largest investment to date.
PLA Plant with 80,000 Ton Capacity
With an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons, the plant is expected to become operational by October 2026. “This will be India’s first PLA plant, giving us a first-mover advantage in this space,” said Vivek Saraogi, Chairman and Managing Director, Balrampur Chini Mills. He also noted that the company is open to increasing production capacity based on demand.
Diversifying Revenue and Reducing Risk
Currently, about 20% of Balrampur Chini’s revenue comes from non-sugar businesses such as ethanol and cogeneration power. The company is now venturing into PLA production to maximize its value stream and diversify risks.
“We aim to generate 50% of our revenue from the non-sugar segment once the PLA plant operates at full capacity. We expect to achieve this target within the next three years,” said Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director.
As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, by investing in PLA, Balrampur Chini is positioning itself as a key player in India’s biopolymer industry while reducing dependence on the sugar sector.
